Syria, Arabism, and Imperial Psychosis

 Samir Sadik, Ruba

A thousand thanks to Sykes-Picot, and if we could, we would put a monument to them, Why?

In this era, and even in some earlier periods and in certain parts of the world, a person has become a citizen, There is no citizen without a homeland, Syrians only knew a homeland through Sykes-Picot, the founder of the first state project in Syria and the rest of the region’s entities, For 400 years under Ottoman rule, there was no Syrian state, no Syrian homeland, And for 1000 years under Arab rule in the Hejaz, there was no Syrian state, no Syrian homeland, Rather, there was a Syrian province within the framework of a Muslim Arab Bedouin Hejazi empire, and later within the framework of an Ottoman Turanian Mongol empire, However, for thousands of years, there has been a region with arbitrary borders compared to the precisely drawn borders of this era, called Syria, There are many interpretations and explanations for why this region is called Syria, but these are not very relevant to the present and future, The geographical name of the region has been Syria for more than 8000 years, and consequently, the people of this region are Syrians, regardless of their ethnic origins. Whoever has lived on Syrian land is Syrian, and their affiliation and identity are Syrian, There is no difference between a Syrian and a Syrian, And another, regardless of his origin or background.

In ancient times, there were no states in the modern sense of the word  There were regions and human entities with tribal or clan customs, or other customs that were distinct and different from the laws and concepts of the modern state, with the exception of some cases such as Rome, which was a “state” even in ancient times, and even turned into a republic , It was a state of law, from which modern Europe took the concept of the “state of law.” Ancient Greece was also a state in a modern sense, which Aristotle explained and the Hellenes practiced admirably, Aristotle’s state is the entity in which rights and duties interact between the citizen and the homeland, The entity turned into a state because it was organized by a law derived from the direct or indirect will of the people, The state means authority and people with a social contract, i.e., law, which the state sponsors, enforces, and monopolizes the violence necessary to implement the provisions of the law (Max Weber).

Religion came with the Arab conquest of the Levant, or what was called Greater Syria, and within it lay a tribal, clan-based Arabism, It subjugated the inhabitants of the Levant by the sword, regardless of their origins, They are Syrians because of the Syrian land, not Arabs, because the land is Syrian, not Arab, The fact that some of them have Arab ethnic origins does not negate their Syrian identity, And we don’t even know what the term “Arab origin” means! Does it refer to Arab chromosomes or Arab sperm? What is it? Syrian identity is a human, geographical identity, not a racial, religious, cultural, or any other form of racism. The land itself cannot be racist!

The concepts of origin and lineage have recently resurfaced as justifications and preludes to legitimizing domination, The claim that God is Arab like Adam, and that Indians, Spaniards, the inhabitants of Damascus and Azerbaijan, and others are Arabs, is nothing but a practice of humiliating racism, This wasn’t unique to our time; it was also humiliating in ancient times, Two thousand years ago, Rome implemented equality between all the peoples of the empire and Rome itself, The invention of origin and lineage was necessary to justify, and thus achieve, the dominance of one origin over others, Dealing with origins in this way was dealing with the substance of racism, which now exists only in the minds of some mentally and emotionally handicapped individuals who consider themselves Arabs (Arabized), They have thus compensated for laziness and failure—laziness and failure stemming from their inherited reliance on the sword and the spoils of war,But what happens when the sword rusts and can no longer be used for plunder, pillage, and enslavement? Here, another sword becomes necessary: racism, and the claim of racial superiority justifies domination as the best nation, which was… Arabization is part of it and a support for it.

We return to thanking Sykes-Picot, because Sykes-Picot provided less than two million Syrians with a decent homeland on earth, with many possibilities for success, The land area is more than sufficient, and the potential of this land to produce is more than adequate, In addition, it provided international recognition, and then the country was placed under mandate, the length of which initially bothered us, and now we regret   because of its brevity, In a quarter of a century, many times more was accomplished in Syria than was accomplished in 14 centuries  That is, the expulsion of the Ottomans was a savior for the peoples of their colonies, and even putting an end to the concept of the Caliphate in general was a priceless rescue operation for humanity!

Sykes-Picot did not divide the unified, because the unified by the sword of Selim I and the sword of Khalid ibn al-Walid or Amr ibn al-Aas or Uqba ibn Nafi… was not originally one, Imperial policy placed all parts of this empire under one authority, which is the authority of the empire, The unity of imperial authority does not mean the unity of the peoples of the empire, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, Spain, and others were parts of one empire, and they were not parts of one nation, and the characteristic of a people-state does not apply to them, nor does the characteristic of a state apply to the empire, especially the Hejazi-Ottoman Empire, unlike the Roman Empire, which was very close to a state because of the factor of equality and the rule of law, while the Arab-Ottoman Empire was very far from a state, and that was because of the lack of the factor of equality between the peoples of this empire and the center of this empire, and because of the lack of positive law, as Sharia was not positive law.

The Caliphate was a religious-authoritarian entity that derived its legitimacy from Islamic law, Therefore, considering the Arab countries as a single entity is a translation of the imperial concept,Their unity was the unity of those who occupied their lands, humiliated them, converted them to Islam, changed their language, robbed them, and enslaved their daughters and women. The unity of the peoples of the empire was in their shared misery, shared servitude, and shared exploitation, They were one in being all a Hejazi-Ottoman colony,Their unity was in forcing them to pay the jizya(tribute) while humiliated and in practicing the turf, Their unity was in being subjected to the application of racist concepts as stated in the Pact of Umar, Their unity was in the principle of “submit and be safe” and the principle of loyalty and disavowal, then inequality, as stated in the humiliation of the Pact of Ibn al-Khattab,It is the unity of the sword held over the necks of peoples who are not one, placed by the emperor or caliph under one administration. That is, it was one administration for different peoples, and the one will was the will of the Caliphate!

Anton Saadeh was right when he said that Arabism, which embraced all this depravity, was a psychological illness, Arabism was an offshoot or translation of the imperial, occupationist, and appropriating concept, which is the disease itself…!
