When Hezbollah triumphed over Lebanon
Osman Ly, George Banna:
After about four weeks of war, Israel occupied southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, Then, in August 2006, the United Nations decided to broker a ceasefire between Lebanon, Israel, and Hezbollah. The three parties signed its terms. Resolution 1701 stipulated the following:
Hezbollah was prevented from being present in southern Lebanon, south of the Litani River. Thus, Israel enjoyed the protection of 15,000 UN soldiers. In addition, Hezbollah was prevented from being supplied with weapons by land and sea, Therefore, since 2006, German ships have been stationed off the Lebanese coast to control the supply of weapons to Hezbollah by sea.
Anyone who thinks carefully about the terms of the 2006 agreement cannot discover any victory for Hezbollah in its war with Israel, except that it won its war on Lebanon,Even some Lebanese and others did not bother to look into the terms of the truce agreement, which is clearly a surrender agreement.
As for Lebanon and its material and moral losses, the story is very painful. Hezbollah was defeated by Israel, but turned defeat into victory, just as Assad did in the 1967 war, and as Ahmed Said, Shukairy, and the Iraqi Information Minister, al-Sahhaf, did during Saddam Hussein’s era, Instead of seizing parts of Palestine, Hezbollah seized Lebanon, which lost more than two thousand dead, while Israel lost approximately 144 dead, More than three thousand Lebanese were wounded, compared to 300 Israeli wounded. Lebanon’s initial losses, according to the Ministry of Health and field treatment costs so far, are $44,880,000. Israel destroyed 72 bridges, with construction and repair costs of $504,000,000. Hezbollah did not destroy a single bridge in Israel, which, in addition, destroyed 28,000 homes at a cost of $290,000,000,000, while Hezbollah destroyed only 11 homes in Israel, In Lebanon, 14,000 homes were damaged and destroyed, and 65% of the Lebanese infrastructure was destroyed. Airports were closed, and three of them were damaged, with repair costs estimated at around $200,000,000,000. The Lebanese coast was polluted, and Israel destroyed 65 factories. Then, the seaports in Lebanon were damaged, while no port in Israel was damaged, Roads were destroyed by 44%, and more than 3,000 shops were destroyed, The agricultural season was ruined by 70 to 100%, and the tourism season produced zero dollars, In addition, many trucks, private cars, and schools were destroyed, Investments in Lebanon stopped by 100%, and what was not destroyed directly was destroyed later by mines in southern Lebanon.
We don’t know how Hezbollah transformed these results into a victory over Israel, and it cannot be considered a victory unless Hezbollah considers itself an independent entity or state that, after the war, managed to strengthen itself internally, triumph over Lebanon, and establish a state within a state, Hezbollah is more closely tied to Iran than to Lebanon, and Iran’s interests outweigh Lebanon’s, Thus, Hezbollah represents a kind of internal imperialism that has entrenched sectarian power-sharing in Lebanon, a system from which Lebanon suffers, as does Iraq. The situation is even worse in Syria, where there is no officially sanctioned sectarian power-sharing, but rather sectarian tyranny, Now, in 2026, Hezbollah has begun provoking Israel on orders from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. However, the consequences of this provocation will not even allow Hezbollah to lie or falsify the truth, because it will cease to be Hezbollah.
