Bedouinism and the duality of work and production

  Mamdouh Bitar, Syriano

Bedouinism, which came with the conquests, became due to forced Arabization and forced Bedouinization a religion, language, traditions and the main cultural inspiration for the peoples of the conquered regions. Bedouinism is not responsible for its ignorance, backwardness and intellectual sterility, nor is it responsible for the weakness of communication in Bedouin life, which, if it existed, was in the form of practicing violence against others and then robbing and plundering them. Bedouin interaction with others was an interaction of hunting for spoils, and how could Bedouinism live without hunting, robbing and plundering? Is it possible for the desert to produce an agricultural environment with dual features of work – production, agriculture and work in agriculture and living from the products of work in agriculture was the only means capable of eliminating Bedouin nomadism and transforming Bedouins into sedentary people

The country that was rightly called the Fertile Crescent differed from the desert, as there was an urban life and a settled life, due to the possibility of working in agriculture, and the availability of conditions for the application of the duality of work and production. However, the Arab Bedouin occupation of the island, which was not satisfied with the strongholds but also included the minds, which it imprinted with the character that came with it, turned these peoples into Bedouins without a desert, and the state of Bedouinism still dominates to a considerable degree over the peoples of the Fertile Crescent until now. The peoples do not work or produce enough, but rather steal through corruption what is sufficient, or what is in excess of sufficiency, as a result of which wealth is produced for a minority, in addition to producing hunger and poverty for the vast majority of the people of this country, who are Bedouin in creation and morals on a land that has no connection to the desert
Working the land and cultivating it in itself includes all the necessary exercises to form and acquire skills regarding movement, interaction, reaction, response, adaptation, harmony, tracking, research, investigation, deduction, formulation of ideas, creativity, discrimination, innovation, programming, planning, matching, intersection, logic, argument, dialogue, guesswork, induction, measurement and many mental brain abilities that constitute the elements of awareness, understanding, logic and the intelligence system in humans, to launch these abilities in his battle and efforts for life…a better life!, and to achieve success and civilizational development in all fields. All of this was available to the peoples of the Fertile Crescent, but was not available to the nomadic Bedouins, because they did not work in the new environment with a plow but remained with the sword
The dominance of muscular power, necessary for victory in conquests and wars, has turned the philosophy of life of these peoples towards “protection” rather than “care.” The strong protect their interests with their muscles, and the principle of care based on distributing protection equally to everyone does not suit them. As long as there is a disparity in muscle power, there will be a disparity in protecting individual interests, i.e., the consecration of inequality
The environment, nature and circumstances impose on man a development that is in harmony with them. The nature of migration is not qualified to create dense groups in its presence, and density imposes some features of civil life in terms of education, communication and exchange of experiences, then respect for the diversity of people and their differences and the diversity of their goals and the growth of their social capabilities. All of that was available to the Bedouins in the new environment, which they did not adapt to. They remained primitive Bedouins, each with his sword, far from the tree and the plow, which was next to him. With the sword, they imposed Bedouinism on people, and times turned people into Bedouins with their mentality and behavior
The desert environment and the coercive forces it imposes on humans do not allow for the birth of thought, civilization and development. Therefore, this unchanging environment imposes the principle of the validity of its customs for all times and places. For the Bedouin, the desert is everywhere. Bedouin hunting is a natural behavior for him. It is the “profession” that led to the crystallization of the concept of Bedouin rights. Everything the Bedouin seizes is his right, lawful and pure. Hunting and oppression were also responsible for producing the concepts of terrorism based on the certainty of right and the certainty of possessing the truth. Whoever feels he possesses the truth is unable to establish a civilization, because interaction is the origin and foundation of building a civilizational system. Whoever possesses the absolute truth does not interact with others and has no need to interact with others. The conditions of Bedouin life only allow for the establishment of the system of the clan and the tribe and the dictatorship of the head of the tribe. What we see now in our Fertile Crescent, the emerging ones, are nothing but rulers tailored to the size and shape of the leadership of the tribe

The transfer of the Bedouin mentality to the country that was originally qualified to build a civilization, and which built the greatest civilizations of humanity before the arrival of Bedouinism, was the founder of stagnation, backwardness, obstruction, fragmentation, fanaticism, corruption and violence. Bedouinism is a colonialism that cannot be removed by a decision, decree, order or gun, but by confronting ignorance and practicing enlightenment. It is heartening to observe a modest beginning to unravel the Bedouin “complex”. There is not a little rejection of the traditional Bedouin culture, which is receiving blows from various sides. There is hope for a bright future
