At that time, in reaction to what the Ottoman Committee of Union and Progress attempted, and influenced by European national thought, Arab nationalism was born, Developments in the last century have shown it to be an illusion or a mirage, incompatible with the historical characteristics of the region’s inhabitants, It was an imitation, not an authentic concept, and no firm political foundations could be found for the idea of ​​Arab unity from the Atlantic to the Gulf, The Arab nationalists relied on weapons that were obsolete even in those ancient times, such as language, religion, and the revival of a decadent past, In other words, the foundations upon which the region between the Atlantic and the Gulf was considered a single entity, lacking only the formal declaration of unity as one state, were flawed and misleading notions, devoid of any basis in sound doctrine, This is what the developments of the last century have demonstrated. There was a confusion or ambiguity between religious thought concerning the nation and political thought concerning the state, A religious nation is not a state society, as it has no known geographical boundaries, while state societies have known and internationally recognized geographical boundaries,There is no similarity between the peoples of the Fertile Crescent or Greater Syria, Among the peoples of the religious nation that includes every follower of Muhammad and has no geographical boundaries, it is impossible to speak of recognizing borders, as long as those geographical boundaries do not exist,Therefore, the amorphous Muhammadan nation without geographical boundaries cannot be considered an alternative to the societies of Greater Syria or the Fertile Crescent with defined geographical boundaries, a shared ancient civilization, and a shared culture, A state cannot be born from an amorphous womb! This is what has been demonstrated throughout the last century, that is, there is no Arab nationalism of religious origin, but rather there is a complete Syrian nationalism in Greater Syria, Considering the peoples between the ocean and the Gulf as one nation is wrong in the sense of “using names contrary to their connotations and meanings,” The developments of the last century have proven the error of this designation, Arabism is nothing but a shared dream between the religious and the new nationalists, or rather the dream of establishing a religious state, because Islam is Arabism and Arabism is Islam, Those concerned with the matter have acknowledged this formula, so they spoke of Arab Islamic states and of Islamic states separately, such as Iran or Afghanistan and others.

 Saadeh’s opposition to Arabism is limited to its religious form, i.e., what is called religious Arabism, because it is not achievable in the form it was proposed, Saadeh did not oppose cooperation between the countries of the region with each other, whether some countries considered themselves Arab or not, Saadeh did not oppose close rapprochement between the countries of the region on the basis of the independence of these countries’ decisions from religion, because the interference of religion in political relations corrupts these relations, which must be built on realism and not on illusion, Illusion does not build countries, and the unification of countries is not a utopian matter, but rather a matter that serves reality and the situation, In short, whoever wants to understand Saadeh’s position, i.e. the position of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, on the issue of unity should look at the emergence and development of the European Union.

  It is clear from the above that Saadeh’s position and the Syrian nationalist opposition to “Arabism” is directed primarily against “religious Arabism,” that is, the nationalist idea that finds its basis and source in religion, which makes it incapable of uniting everyone in an idea that transcends the religious, sectarian, and doctrinal differences that characterize the groups of this region, Based on this vision, Saadeh spoke about the duality of illusory Arabism and real Arabism, The goal of any unity project is progress and transformation for the better. With illusions, there is no progress or transformation for the better, but rather the reaping of failure and disappointment, This is what happened through the experience of the Syrian-Egyptian union and many other immature unions such as the union project between Yemen and Libya and others.

Unity between Syria and Saudi Arabia, for example, is impossible due to the vast differences between the Saudi and Syrian people, despite their shared religion and language, The European Union model is one that Saadeh would not have opposed had he lived to see it, but he was unable to do so because he now lives in his grave, his body riddled with bullets, A nation that ends Saadeh’s life with bullets 24 hours after his arrest and “trial” is a morally dead nation., The proof of this nation’s demise is what we see today in the massacres in Syria, which demonstrate the transmission of the disease of barbarism from the Ottomans and the Quraysh to the Syrians through habituation, Had Saadeh witnessed this, he would have renounced not only religious Arabism but also religious Syrian identity, Saadeh failed to realize during his lifetime that the Syrians could not remain Syrians after being infected by the Quraysh and Ottoman diseases and after suffering from this chronic illness for fourteen centuries!
