The sectarian military: its advantages and disadvantages

Ma Bitar, Ruba Mansour

كاريكاتير/ الجولاني، لعبة لمصالح القوى الإقليمية والدولية    The motivation for writing this article was Mr. Sabbagh’s comment on the banning of stalls and carts in the streets of Hama, and his hope that the owners of the stalls and carts would join the army after their carts and stalls were removed, That is, he wanted to mobilize a larger number of Syrians, Undoubtedly, Mr. Sabbagh and his ilk rejected ideas such as the idea of conscientious objection or the abolition of compulsory military service, That is, the success of the state is linked, according to his opinion and the opinion of his ilk, to the victories of the army or militias, and this is not possible, Therefore, we consider it nonsense.

Demands to change the form or structure of the army have never stopped, Years ago, the opposition in Geneva demanded the restructuring of the army, which had turned into Assad’s brigades, Restructuring meant turning Assad’s brigades into a national Syrian army, Minutes after this demand was announced, Assad’s thugs were outraged, rejecting the restructuring and demanding that the army remain as it is, warning of the development of things in Syria as they did after the dissolution of the Iraqi army, It is expected that the    al julani  residents will now act as the Assad supporters did years ago, as the al julani is nothing but a continuation of Assadism by more degenerate means such as blatant sectarianism.

It is beneficial to learn from the experiences of others, such as the Iraqis,The Syrian situation is, in reality, only a worse version of the Iraqi one, In Iraq, the army was dissolved, and in Syria, the army disintegrated and transformed into something else entirely, bearing no resemblance to a national army, This occurred during the Assad era and continued, even worse, during the al julani    era, The army became nothing more than a group of officers who were essentially merchants and contractors, and nominally resistance fighters, The distortion of the armed forces increased during the al julani era to an unprecedented degree in the history of nations and their armies,The situation in Iraq, in general, is not admirable, while the Syrian situation is astonishing, Despite this, we consider the development of the Syrian situation into the Iraqi one to be nothing less than a wish… If only Syria were like Iraq!

We have a sectarian consciousness in this country, a sectarianism that, as expected, has generally led to sectarian wars on the coast, in the south, and inland as well, These wars are unprecedented in their barbarity, The Church has never before canceled Easter celebrations, but it did so recently in protest against the sectarianism embodied by the   al julani authority, This authority, indifferent to the implications of canceling Easter celebrations, is barbaric and foolish, However, it will feel the consequences of its barbarity, insolence, and stupidity through the policies of the international community towards it, as happened during al-Julani’s recent visit to Germany and England, The al julani beggar was promised 200 million euros in Germany, conditional on his behavior, which he cannot change because it reflects his criminal and sectarian nature, as recently demonstrated in the town of al-Suqaylabiyah, Consequently, not a single euro will be provided, Al-Julani will have to manage his affairs in Syria after the announcement of the deportation of 80% of Syrian refugees from Germany and similar measures from other European countries. No help!!!

It is true that most Iraqi political parties, or rather religious groups, have a sectarian background, and this is officially acknowledged,A palliative measure was the quota system (sectarian consciousness), Syria needs decades to reach a stage of open dialogue and the ability to deal rationally with such dialogue, In Iraq, there is an understanding of the problem that needs solving; in Syria, this understanding is weak to nonexistent, Even the so-called “sectarian purity” imposed by Hafez al-Assad is dead, and sectarian practices are no longer carried out with any degree of shame—openly, as they say,Talking about the harms of sectarianism is unwelcome. Assad declared that there was not a single sectarian in Syria, yet now we see that there are only sectarians, The departure of Christians will not change the sectarian conflict; changing the sectarian conflict for the better is a grand illusion!

Returning to the army means returning to the al julani  militias, Historically, this army has only been a source of defeats for the Syrian state against Israel, However, the destruction of Syria was not at the hands of Israel, but rather at the hands of Assad’s brigades, the armed Shabiha, then the political Shabiha, the julani Islamist factions, and everyone who fired a bullet inside Syria. Proving this is very easy, Anyone who doubts it only needs to compare Syria after years of wars waged against it by brigades and factions with Syria in 1967 after the great defeat against Israel, which did not destroy more than 1% of what the Syrian brigades and factions destroyed in terms of type, quality, and quantity, There is no parallel to Syrian savagery, so it can be said that it is a “historical” savagery!

From a budget that never exceeded $16 billion over the years, and today the budget is estimated at $2.5 billion, the army’s share was always around 80%, meaning that the Assad Protection Brigades took the lion’s share of the funding, The army lost 150 aircraft in the 1967 war without these aircraft participating in any significant combat effort, except for carrying out a single raid inside Israel, As for the 1973 war, at the outbreak of the war the army possessed 300 fighter aircraft, more than 100 SAM missile batteries, 500 missile launchers, and 400 anti-aircraft guns,About 100 Syrian aircraft participated in the war, and their raids targeted many Israeli defense, observation, and artillery positions, However, during the entire war, the Syrian Air Force carried out only one unsuccessful raid in the heart of Israel, targeting the city of Haifa. The 1982 Lebanon War was no exception to the rule of the army’s defeats, during which it lost about 100 aircraft, 88 of which were shot down in air-to-air battles, most of them in the Bekaa Valley,As for Israel, it lost 10 aircraft, none of which were shot down in air battles.

In contrast, the massive army was able to annihilate Hama in 1983, and was able to commit many massacres, and to carry out military coups that brought Assad to power, and then to destroy most of the Syrian cities and kill hundreds of thousands of their people and then displace most of the Syrian people, Moreover, the brigades were always responsible for violating freedoms and destroying every democratic attempt, not to mention corruption, bribery, renting out borders, smuggling, and monopolizing the economy and public funds.

We do not believe that saving Syria is possible without eliminating the internal Assad-Julani colonialism, Nor can the Julani regime continue to spread and exploit corruption, dictatorship, sectarianism, tyranny, and exploitation without the army—that is, without the militias and internal and external mercenaries such as the Uyghurs and Chechens, The relationship between the army or militias and the regime is reciprocal; neither can exist without the other, as their fate is intertwined, Here we ask: Is it the duty of a Syrian citizen to serve an individual or a gang? Is it the duty of the Syrian constitution to compel citizens to serve an individual or a gang? Therefore, it is imperative to enshrine in the constitution a prohibition against any armed force influencing the political situation in order to protect the homeland, freedom, and conscience! The destruction of Syria did not stop a year and a half ago; rather, it has intensified in the last sixteen months, This increase is an indicator of its demise!
