Antoun Saadeh and Arab unity
The Levant was a Quraysh colony for a thousand years, then an Ottoman colony for 400 years, and after the First World War, the region was placed under French-English supervision, In Syria and Lebanon, its name was “mandate,” meaning the qualification of these peoples for self-rule. Officially, it was the League of Nations that formulated the idea of the mandate for the purpose of qualification.
At that time, as a reaction to what the Ottoman Union and Progress tried to do, and influenced by European nationalist thought, Arab nationalist thought was born, which developments in the last century have shown to be an illusion or a mirage that did not align with the characteristics of the history of the peoples of the region,It was reactive and not original, and it was not possible to discover solid political origins for the idea of Arab unity from the ocean to the Gulf, What the Arabists armed themselves with was based on weapons that were even at that time invalid, such as language, religion, and the revival of the decadent past, That is, the foundations upon which the regions between the ocean and the Gulf were considered one, lacking only the official declaration of their unity in the form of a single state, Those were corrupt and misleading notions that lacked the quality of a belief built on solid foundations, and this is what developments in the last century have proven, There has been confusion or ambiguity between religious thought regarding the nation and political thought regarding the state, The nation of religion is not a state society, since the nation of religion has no known geographical borders, while state societies have known geographical borders that are internationally recognized, There is no similarity between The peoples of the Fertile Crescent or Greater Syria and among the peoples of the religious nation that includes every Muhammadan, which has no geographical borders, therefore it is not possible to talk about recognizing borders, as long as those geographical borders do not exist and therefore the amorphous Muhammadan nation without geographical borders cannot be considered as an alternative to the societies of Greater Syria or the Fertile Crescent, which has specific geographical borders and a common ancient civilization and its own culture, a state cannot be born from a gelatinous womb! This has been proven throughout the last century, that is, there is no Arab nationalism of religious origin, but rather there is a complete presence of Syrian nationalism in Greater Syria, considering the peoples between the ocean and the Gulf as one nation is wrong due to the use of names that contradict their connotations and meanings, and the developments of the last century have proven the error of this designation, Arabism is nothing but a shared dream between the religious and the new Arabists, or rather the dream of establishing a religious state, because Islam is Arabism and Arabism is Islam, and those concerned with the matter have recognized this formula, so they speak of the Arab Islamic states and the Islamic states separately, such as Iran or Afghanistan and others.
Saadeh’s opposition to Arabism is confined to its religious form, that is, what is called religious Arabism. Saadeh did not oppose cooperation between the countries of the region, whether some countries considered themselves Arab or not, He did not oppose the close rapprochement between the countries of the region on the basis of the independence of these countries’ decisions from religion, because the interference of religion in political relations spoils these relations, which must be built on realism and not illusion, Illusion does not build countries, and the unification of countries is not a utopian matter, but rather something that serves reality and the situation, In short, whoever wants to understand Saadeh’s position, that is, the position of the Syrian Social Nationalist Movement, on the issue of unity should take a look at the emergence and development of the European Union!
