Call for an end to violence in Syria and establishment of a transitional authority

Syrian government and opposition groups have been asked to recommit themselves to a sustained cessation of armed violence and implement the six point peace plan immediately

The Action Group for Syria which has been meeting in Geneva called for the establishment of an executive transitional governing body in Syria whose membership should be drawn from government and opposition groups

The transitional authority will be mandated to review the constitution and conduct free and fair multi-party election

The UN Arab league joint envoy Kofi Annan said further consultation with the Syrian people will held in order to draw up a come up with clear timetable for the transition process

“Today the international community has taken its cooperation to a stronger level by being clearer and more specific. They have laid up a path we hope the Syrian people can embrace and work with. We are determined to work together urgently and intensively to bring about an end to the violence and human rights abuses and the launch of a Syrian led political process leading to a transition that meets the legitimate and aspirations of the Syrian people and enables them independently and democratically to determine their own future

The Action Group for Syria meeting  was called by the joint UN and Arab league envoy Kofi Annan and attended by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and Qatar. Secretaries-General of the United Nations and the League of Arab States were also in attendance
